THE POEM FOR TODAY
HIS TEACHERS
When he was teaching, all his
students were
his teachers, though they didn’t
know it then.
They taught him that this life can
be a blur
of wonderful surprises, and that
when
you fail, just compliment a friend,
or smile
at someone sad. They helped him
know the truth
in poems, and how to walk the halls
with style.
They taught him how to put the zing
of youth
in sentences, and how to feel the force
of Harper Lee. They taught as partners,
he
and all his students. His English course
enabled him to learn a lot, for
free.
Today, we were at the Y bright and early for a good workout, then home for breakfast in the sunroom and a morning of quiet writing for me. Delycia worked in her garden, staking up irises and poppies that had fallen over in the heavy rain yesterday.
At noon, we met some friends at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church in New London for lunch at the annual Greek Festival. The food was delicious, as Greek food almost always is. We chatted with our friends and ate and laughed and loved the New London Greeks for their wonderful food.
