The dining room in Florence Griswold's home, with paintings by visiting artists |
Yesterday, Cia had a long hike with Evelyn in Pachaug State Forest. She was worn out but excited when she arrived home, exhilarated to have spent several quality hours with one of her best friends. (See photos of lichen below)
Meanwhile, I relaxed at home with several good books ("Mindset" by Carol Dweck, and a novel Cia and I are loving, "Lorna Doone"). I also did some writing, another in a long series of meditative paragraphs. I truly enjoy composing these short pieces, just watching how the words slowly settle themselves into their proper positions. It's a fascinating process, and a truly humbling one. It makes me realize, each time I do it, that "I" really don't have much to do with the writing. Somehow, the right words arrive and arrange themselves on the screen. It's like somehow raindrops land precisely where they should land, with no help from me. Writing a paragraph, I suppose, is like letting the rain fall where it will.
On Friday, we were fortunate to have Jamie invite us to spend time with him and the kids, so we visited them for a few hours in the afternoon. The best fun for us was splashing and being completely silly in the pool. As usual, I was the great fish-whale, gently and lovingly attacking everyone, while Cia did all kinds of happy tricks and stunts to keep the kids laughing. I think we make a great pair of grandparents! (Photos below . . .)
