TODAY'S POEM
TURNING
(10/12/18)
She loves the turning
she sees in her life -
the revolving of darkness and daylight,
the way sorrow can spin
and become wisdom,
and confusion can circle around
to understanding.
Today she saw trees twirling
to the east and then the west
while her thoughts were whirling
to face all directions
with delight.
Her life continually changes course,
which she loves,
like she loves how breezes
swivel and shift
as they live their
ever-developing lives
around her.
Today we went to the Y for an early workout, and I managed to drag my pain-filled back and leg through some light exercises. This week I had two good visits with an energetic and inspiring physical therapist, so i do feel pretty positive about the situation, but last night was not a good night of sleep for me, and today at the gym was more like torture than exercise. Oh well ...
This afternoon I felt much better, strangely enough. It was a peaceful, cooling-off fall day, and I thoroughly enjoyed my comfortable lazy boy and a wonderful new history of the US by Jill Lepore. She's a Harvard professor, so she knows her history, but she's also a regular contributor to The New Yorker, which means she seriously knows how to write.
We set out our handsomely carved pumpkins a few nights ago, complete with inner lights, but sadly, this morning we saw that they were slowly becoming mush. Oh well ... maybe we'll carve a couple more next week.
