Last
night, Delycia and I were lucky enough to attend a sparkling concert by the
Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra – a concert that seemed to be filled
with precise and lighthearted playing by the entire orchestra. I am certainly
no expert in these matters, but there seemed to be both concord and eagerness
in the performance -- a vigorous togetherness among the orchestra members, a
unison in spirit and skill. The music they made was meticulous but also
forceful. They seemed both careful and carefree as they played. It reminded me,
in a way, of the wild precision I see in the outdoors, the way nature does
things precisely but effervescently. Leaves fall exactly when they should, but
they do it with the liveliness of little children. The sun rises at precisely
the correct time, but always with its sunny enthusiasm. Strange, that accuracy
and zest are so mixed up in our lives. In orchestras and nature, nothing works
well without a mixture of exactness and unrestraint.
