Yesterday, waking up very early again, we went to the Y for a pre-breakfast workout, pounding away on side-by-side treadmills. Then, home for breakfast and a fairly quiet day of errands and reading and writing. I enjoyed coffee with Charlie at 10, just catching up on his news and sharing thoughts about a number of things, including our understanding of "One Hundred Years of Solitude".

In the afternoon, we drove up to Middletown for our first class on Japanese poetry at Wesleyan
University. This is part of their "Lifelong Learners" program, a wonderful way for seniors to stay involved with excellent college professors. This course is being taught by a woman who started at Wesleyan in 1978 and retired in 2006, but who obviously maintains a sharp interest and enthusiasm for Japanese literature, especially poetry. We very much enjoyed the first class, and look forward to the next two.

Dinner was one of Cia's wonderful soup-and-salad meals. She worked for several hours carefully preparing it, and it was, as usual, a total treat.
