Yesterday we attended another wonderful concert by the Eastern CT Symphony Orchestra. As usual, we arrived early for the pre-talk, and it was inspiring to hear the violin soloist talk about his love of his work, and also to hear the very young female composer discuss her composition. We felt lucky to be supporters of an orchestra that insists on bringing female composers to their stage at least once each year. The concert was splendid, start to finish. We both loved each piece, starting with the young Russian composer's piece called "Winter Bells", a charming, strange, eerie, and captivating composition. The Brahms violin concerto was my favorite part of the evening -- so many memorable melodies, and the soloist played like it was his all-time favorite piece of music. The final section of the performance was a seldom-heard symphony by a Russian contemporary of Tchaikovsky, and it was a perfect way to end a splendid evening. The music was intense but uplifting, melodious but also hard-hitting. On the way home, we said, over and over, that it was a perfect concert. Lucky us1

Today we attended the Quaker meeting in Westerly, and I enjoyed myself very much. I struggled a bit with the second half of the silent hour (my mind drifted off in many directions), but the silence itself was peaceful and heartening. Afterwards, we had a chance to enjoy tea and coffee and a visit with a few of our new friends. A very good morning, indeed.
