A MORNING IN THE BERKSHIRES
(two in their 70s)

We kayaked on the lake and then walked up
and down some rolling hills. It was a cup

of pleasure on a morning made for queens
and kings. We treasure what our friendship means,

and friendship on a lake among old hills
can easily create the kind of thrills

a sunrise gives. We may be elderly in years,

but people heard us singing youthful cheers.

It was, indeed, a wonderful morning for us. Our easy-going kayak paddle around the lake was inspiring for its silence and peacefulness. We took our time, exploring places that caught our attention, sometimes talking quietly as we paddled. At the town beach, I took a brief, refreshing swim just before the beach opened and a swarm of families with kids came rushing in.

Later, we drove to Lenox and had lunch at a small cafe, and then walked for about 40 minutes, up and down some fairly steep hills and around the village. Back at the cottage, we relaxed with our laptops down by the lake, refreshing ourselves with a swim now and then. Dinner was at a wonderful French cafe, where we both enjoyed a masterfully prepared rainbow trout. Cia finished off hers with a delicious-looking plate of macaroons and berries.
