Last
night we saw a beautiful film at the Westerly Library, as part of a celebration
of Italian Heritage Month. The film was “Bellissima” (1952) starring Anna
Magnani, and I can’t recall seeing a more moving or honest film. I was totally
caught up in the affectionate, sincerely told story of a mother trying to set
her young daughter up for a career in the movies. The acting by Magnani was
brilliant, as was the direction by Luchino Visconti.
I
guess it was fitting that in Westerly’s stunning, newly renovated library we
saw such a dazzling film.
