Today we had a wonderful trip up to Amherst to visit Emily Dickinson's home. It was a quietly inspiring day for us, in so many ways. Just being in her house was somehow uplifting, perhaps because we could feel the power of her thoughts and words as we walked through the halls and rooms. We were led by a very knowledgable volunteer guide, who seemed just as inspired and grateful as we were to be there. We also visited the cemetery where the poet is buried, just for a few moments, just to be near such an important literary shrine. In between, we had a wonderful lunch at a local deli, and the long drive home was filled with our usual sincere and wide-ranging conversation.
Two good friends,
with the Dickinson home in the background

Her stone in the cemetery,
with "Called Back" on it,
the last words she wrote
to her beloved nephews
a few days before she died
